Colares UFO Flap — Operation Saucer

In 1977, residents of Colares, a small island at the mouth of the Amazon in Pará state, Brazil, began experiencing a phenomenon they called 'chupa-chupa' — Portuguese for 'suck-suck.' Luminous craft of various shapes — disc-like, cylindrical, and cigar-shaped — descended at night and fired narrow beams of intense white or bluish light at individuals, typically striking the neck or chest area. Victims reported burning sensations, puncture marks, hair loss, anemia, and pronounced fatigue consistent with radiation exposure. Local physician Dr. Wellaide Cecim Carvalho treated approximately 80 affected patients and documented the physical injuries. The wave was sufficiently severe and widespread that the Brazilian Air Force launched a formal investigation in May 1977 under the command of Captain Uyrangê Hollanda Lima of the 1st Regional Air Command. The operation — officially designated Operação Prato (Operation Saucer) — stationed a team of Air Force officers on Colares island from May to December 1977. The team photographed and filmed numerous encounters using 35mm cameras and 16mm film. By the end of the operation, they had accumulated over 2,000 photographs and extensive footage. Captain Hollanda's team documented multiple categories of craft and recorded testimonies from over 40 directly affected witnesses. Their confidential report was completed in 1977 and classified. In 1996, portions of the Operation Saucer files were released by the Brazilian Air Force under pressure from researchers; the full documentation was formally declassified in 2004. The official Brazilian Air Force conclusion stated that the phenomena were real, of unknown origin, and that the objects demonstrated control and directionality inconsistent with natural phenomena. Captain Hollanda, who had by 1997 retired from the Air Force, gave an extended interview to researcher A.J. Gevaerd in 1997 in which he confirmed the reality of the events, the authenticity of the photographs, and stated that he himself had been moved to tears during the investigation by the suffering of the local population. He also stated that he had made personal sightings of the craft and was convinced they were intelligently controlled. Hollanda died by suicide in October 1997, one month after giving the interview. The circumstances surrounding his death have been disputed by colleagues who were in contact with him in the weeks prior.
