On August 29, 1967, two children — François Delpeuch, thirteen years old, and his sister Anne-Marie, nine — were tending a herd of cattle in a pasture near the village of Cussac in the Cantal region of south-central France when they noticed four small figures in an adjacent field. The children initially assumed the figures were other children, but as they watched, the figures' behavior became strange — and then the children observed the figures ascending vertically into a spherical craft that had been sitting in the grass nearby. The beings were described as approximately one meter tall, black in color (possibly wearing black garments), and extremely thin. Their movements were described as very rapid, almost mechanical. Three of the beings were observed moving around the ground near a sphere approximately two meters in diameter. The fourth being appeared at the top of the sphere. When one of the children called out, the beings immediately moved toward the sphere — with at least one appearing to rise vertically into it as if floating rather than climbing. The sphere then rose from the ground, emitting a loud whistling sound and a sulfurous smell that the children compared to burning sulfur. As the sphere departed, it ascended steeply before moving horizontally and rapidly disappearing. The children were left shaken and ran home. Their parents observed that both children were genuinely distressed and that François had reddened eyes, possibly from the sulfur emission. Gendarmes from the local post arrived at the site within a few hours of the report. They confirmed the presence of a strong sulfurous odor at the landing location and observed traces in the grass consistent with an object having rested there. The gendarmes filed a formal report, and the case was investigated by the Gendarmerie Nationale and subsequently by GEPAN. Their investigation found both children to be credible, their account internally consistent, and the physical traces genuine. The Cussac encounter is notable in the UAP literature for several reasons: the independence and consistency of two child witnesses who were interviewed separately, the physical evidence documented within hours by law enforcement, and the occupant descriptions — which match the general parameters of small, fast-moving entities reported in other French cases of the same period. The case was formally catalogued by GEPAN as one of the higher-credibility French close encounter cases.
