Humanoid figures observed on the deck of the hovering disc over two consecutive nights at Boianai mission. Figures waved back at witnesses when gestured to. Note: This event is catalogued under Boianai 1959 in the archive.

On September 16, 1994, at approximately 10:15 in the morning, sixty-two children between the ages of six and twelve were playing on the grounds of the Ariel School in Ruwa, Zimbabwe, while their teachers were attending a staff meeting inside. The children witnessed a series of objects descend from the sky and land in a rough scrubland area adjacent to the school playground, just beyond the fence line. According to the accounts of the children — gathered independently by teachers, BBC journalist Tim Leach, and Harvard psychiatrist Dr. John Mack in the days and weeks following the incident — multiple silver disc-shaped objects descended rapidly and landed or hovered just above the ground approximately one hundred meters from where the children were watching. Most children reported seeing one to four objects; several saw what they described as one large craft and several smaller ones. The children had no access to television and extremely limited exposure to popular UAP imagery at the time, making cultural contamination an unlikely explanation for the consistency of their accounts. Multiple children independently reported seeing one or two beings emerge from or stand near one of the landed objects. The beings were described as small — roughly one meter tall — with very large eyes and thin bodies, wearing tight black suits. Several children reported the beings communicated with them non-verbally, transmitting feelings or visual impressions rather than words. Two dominant themes emerged across many children's accounts: imagery of environmental destruction and a sense of urgency or warning. BBC journalist Tim Leach arrived at the school within twenty-four hours and filmed extensive interviews with the children before the accounts could be significantly contaminated by adult coaching. The footage showed children drawing consistent object shapes, and several broke down emotionally while describing their experience — suggesting genuine psychological impact. Dr. John Mack, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Harvard psychiatrist who had become a leading researcher of close encounter experiences, traveled to Ruwa and spent two days interviewing the children. His assessment was that the children were not lying, were not suffering from group hysteria, and had experienced something they genuinely believed to be real and extraordinary. Mack noted the cross-cultural consistency of the entities described with reports from other countries, and the environmental message theme recurred in his broader research. The Ariel School incident is considered one of the most significant UAP close encounter cases on record because of the large number of child witnesses, the independent corroboration of their accounts, the quality of the contemporaneous documentation, and the involvement of a credentialed academic researcher.
