Reported Entity Types
Non-Human Intelligence (NHI)
Nine documented entity categories drawn from military and government investigations, academic abduction research, and credible multi-witness close encounter cases spanning eight decades.
Small Grey
Frequently ReportedAlso known as: classic grey · EBE · Zeta Reticulan
The most frequently reported non-human entity type worldwide — consistently described as short, grey-skinned beings with large black eyes and slight builds. They appear primarily in close encounter and abduction scenarios, performing physical examinations in a methodical, emotionally detached manner. Their consistency across thousands of geographically and culturally unconnected accounts is the primary evidentiary argument offered by researchers.
Physical Description
- Height approximately 3–4.5 feet
- Proportionally large, hairless, bulbous cranium
- Large almond-shaped wrap-around black eyes; no visible iris or whites
- Vestigial nose — two small nostril slits
- Thin slit for a mouth; rarely opens
- Smooth grey or blue-grey skin; described as cool to the touch
- Extremely thin limbs; three to four long fingers
Reported Behavior
- Operates in groups; does not appear to act independently
- Performs physical and biological procedures on abductees
- Communicates via direct telepathic impression — no audible speech
- Emotionally neutral and clinical; no apparent compassion or cruelty
- Appears subordinate to taller Grey or other entity types
- Capable of inducing paralysis via unknown mechanism
- Described as drone-like or robotic in function
Notable Cases
First widely publicized Grey abduction case. Both witnesses under separate hypnosis independently described identical beings with large wrap-around black eyes. Papers archived at the University of New Hampshire.
Walton disappeared for five days after being struck by a beam from a craft witnessed by his six-person logging crew. He described waking aboard the craft in the presence of small grey beings. Five of six crew members passed polygraphs.
Author described repeated encounters with small grey beings at his upstate New York cabin, documented in the 1987 book "Communion." Introduced the archetype to mass culture; the book sold millions of copies worldwide.
Tall Grey
Occasionally ReportedAlso known as: grey leader · grey commander
Tall Greys are consistently described as hierarchically superior to small Greys — functioning as commanders, overseers, or primary communicators. They share the same basic morphology as small Greys but are notably taller, more individually expressive, and more often directly communicate with the abductee. In many cases they appear alongside small Greys, directing the examination.
Physical Description
- Height 6–7 feet, occasionally taller
- Same hairless, large-cranium profile as small Greys
- Large black almond eyes; slightly more defined facial features
- Slightly more developed nose and mouth than small Grey variant
- Taller, more elongated frame; same thin build
- Grey, blue-grey, or lighter skin tone
- Typically fewer per encounter than small Greys
Reported Behavior
- Acts as primary communicator — verbal or telepathic
- Displays more apparent individuality than small Greys
- Oversees and directs small Grey entities during procedures
- More likely to explain procedures or offer information
- Described as more emotionally present, though profoundly alien
- In some accounts, conveys urgency regarding Earth's environment
- Associated with showing witnesses imagery or visions of the future
Notable Cases
Betty described a "leader" who was taller and communicated in English, showing her a three-dimensional star map. Later analyzed by astronomer Marjorie Fish as potentially depicting the Zeta Reticuli system.
Nordic
Occasionally ReportedAlso known as: Pleiadians · Space Brothers · tall whites · blondes
Nordic entities are described as human-appearing, tall, and physically idealized — often indistinguishable from Northern European humans. They are the most frequently reported "benevolent" type, associated with philosophical and environmental warnings rather than medical examination. First prominent in the 1950s contactee era, they remain reported in close encounter cases through the present.
Physical Description
- Height 5.5–7 feet; proportional human build
- Long, straight blond or light brown hair
- Blue, green, or occasionally violet eyes
- Fair to pale skin
- High, broad foreheads; delicate, symmetrical facial features
- Described as physically perfect or idealized
- Wearing one-piece fitted suits or robes in many cases
Reported Behavior
- Communicates telepathically and/or verbally in the witness's language
- Described as calm, gentle, and benevolent in demeanor
- Conveys warnings about nuclear weapons, environmental destruction, or human development
- Does not typically perform physical procedures on witnesses
- May invite witnesses aboard for a tour or dialogue
- Alleged to originate from the Pleiades star cluster or other systems
- In some reports, works alongside or in contrast to Grey entities
Notable Cases
Contactee claimed face-to-face contact with a human-appearing being named Orthon, who communicated concern about nuclear testing. Adamski's account launched the contactee movement and the Nordic archetype.
After initial grey encounters, Walton was led to a room containing three tall, blond, human-looking entities in orange jumpsuits. They communicated nothing but appeared to guide him.
Farmer Eduard Meier claimed repeated contact with a Nordic woman named Semjase from the Pleiades. Produced extensive photographs and metal samples. Some analyses found no evidence of hoax.
Reptilian
Rarely ReportedAlso known as: reptoid · saurian · Draco
Reptilian entities are described in a subset of close encounter reports as tall, bipedal, reptile-like beings. They occupy a distinct place in encounter literature — less frequently reported in standard abduction cases but appearing consistently in cases involving confrontational or threatening encounters. The Schirmer case of 1967 is among the earliest documented records.
Physical Description
- Height 6–8 feet; powerfully built, broad-shouldered
- Scaly or rough-textured skin; typically green, brown, or grey-green
- Large slit-pupil eyes; amber, yellow, or red coloration
- Flat, pronounced nasal ridge; wide mouth with small or absent lips
- Clawed hands; four to five digits
- Long neck; some reports describe a crest or ridge along the skull
- Often described wearing uniform-like garments
Reported Behavior
- Described as authoritative, commanding, and sometimes aggressive
- Less associated with medical examination; more associated with interrogation
- Communicates telepathically; in some cases verbally
- Has appeared alongside grey entities in some abduction accounts
- The "winged serpent" chest emblem noted in multiple independent reports
- Sometimes described as showing disdain toward witnesses
Notable Cases
Police officer encountered a metallic craft on patrol. Under hypnosis with the University of Colorado UFO Project, he recalled beings with grey-white skin, flat noses, and slanted eyes — each wearing a winged serpent emblem. He passed a polygraph. One of the earliest documented reptilian-characteristic encounters on record.
Insectoid / Mantis
Occasionally ReportedAlso known as: mantis being · mantid · praying mantis alien
Insectoid or Mantis-type entities are among the most visually distinctive reported NHI types — tall, extremely thin beings with triangular heads, compound eyes, and multi-jointed limbs. They consistently appear in a supervisory or hierarchical authority role, overseeing procedures performed by grey beings. Their communication is described as uniquely authoritative and transmitted as complete thought-images.
Physical Description
- Height 7–9 feet; extremely elongated and thin
- Triangular or elongated wedge-shaped head
- Large compound or multifaceted eyes — green, amber, or black
- Segmented exoskeleton; appears chitinous or oily
- Multiple joints on arms and legs; forelimbs resemble mantis forearms
- Claw-like hands; three to four digits
- Green, grey, brown, or translucent coloration
Reported Behavior
- Consistently described as the senior or directing entity
- Transmits complete thought-images telepathically
- Exchanges with other entities sometimes involve audible clicking sounds
- Calm, deliberate, and extremely focused
- Appears to direct or supervise grey entities during examination
- Some witnesses report a sense of immense antiquity
- Associated with initiating contact or granting permission for procedures
Notable Cases
Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker were floated aboard a craft by robotic-appearing creatures with claw-like hands. The insectoid body plan matches descriptions across independent cases. Both men passed polygraphs; a secretly recorded post-incident conversation showed no deception.
Across multiple independently investigated abduction cases in the 1990s, witnesses described a tall thin mantis-like entity in a supervisory role alongside shorter grey beings. Cross-case consistency noted by researchers David Jacobs and Budd Hopkins.
Robotic / Mechanical Being
Rarely ReportedAlso known as: android · drone being · mechanical entity · artificial being
Robotic or mechanical-appearing entities are clearly artificial or machine-like in construction and movement. Unlike greys, which may appear organic, these beings are metallic, jointed, or mechanical — moving in jerky or non-biological patterns. They may represent autonomous drones, AI-controlled forms, or a distinct NHI category with a non-biological substrate.
Physical Description
- Variable height; 3.5 feet (Hopkinsville type) to over 6 feet
- Metallic, reflective, or dark grey surface
- Jointed, segmented limbs suggesting mechanical construction
- Large, luminous eyes — often glowing yellow or orange
- No apparent hair, mouth, or nose in most cases
- Oversized, claw-like or pincer-type hands in several accounts
- Jerky, mechanical, or floating movement pattern
Reported Behavior
- Does not communicate verbally or telepathically in most reports
- Responds to aggression with apparent invulnerability
- Performs tasks in a mechanical, purpose-driven manner
- In some encounter cases, repeatedly approached without entering a structure over hours
- Shows no apparent fear response; bullets appear ineffective in multiple reports
Notable Cases
The Sutton family and guests reported small luminous, glowing-eyed robotic beings approaching their farmhouse repeatedly for several hours. Beings were shot multiple times with no apparent effect. Air Force classified as a hoax in Project Blue Book; multiple investigators found witnesses credible and consistent.
Hickson described the three entities as having claw-like pincers in place of hands, a mechanical slit for a mouth, and robotic movement. A giant mechanical eye conducted the examination.
Energy / Light Being
Occasionally ReportedAlso known as: light entity · plasma being · luminous entity · interdimensional being
Energy or light beings manifest as coherent luminous structures, shifting light fields, or plasma-like presences rather than solid physical forms. Witnesses report them as clearly sentient and purposeful. Jacques Vallée and John Keel theorized this category may point toward non-extraterrestrial, interdimensional origins for at least some UAP phenomena. The FREE Foundation survey found them reported in roughly 55% of NHI contact cases.
Physical Description
- No fixed solid form; appears as structured or concentrated light
- White, golden, blue, or multi-spectrum luminosity
- May appear as a humanoid outline of light, a glowing sphere, or formless radiance
- Can manifest and dematerialize instantly
- Reported to pass through solid materials
- Size variable; from human-scale to room-filling
Reported Behavior
- Communicates via direct mental transmission — words, images, or emotional impressions
- Often described as conveying overwhelming compassion, knowledge, or authority
- Does not perform physical procedures; interaction is informational or transformative
- Frequently associated with significant personal transformation in witnesses
- FREE Foundation study: reported in ~55% of NHI contact cases from 4,200+ respondents
- Associated with near-death experience overlap in witness testimony
Notable Cases
Some Hessdalen Valley witnesses reported close-proximity encounters with light-form entities that appeared to respond to their presence. Project Hessdalen's scientific monitoring confirmed sustained anomalous light phenomena.
The Foundation for Research into Extraterrestrial Encounters surveyed 4,200+ NHI contact experiencers. Energy or light beings were among the most commonly reported types at ~55% frequency. 70% of respondents reported their encounters changed their lives positively.
Human-Hybrid
Occasionally ReportedAlso known as: hybrid being · hubrid · grey hybrid · hybrid child
Human-hybrid entities blend human and non-human physical characteristics — more human than greys but clearly non-human, with pallid skin, over-large eyes, and thin builds. The "hybrid program" hypothesis, developed by researchers Budd Hopkins and Dr. David Jacobs through work with 150+ abductees over 25 years, proposes a systematic effort by grey-type entities to create human-NHI hybrids. Advanced-generation "hubrids" are described as nearly indistinguishable from humans.
Physical Description
- Variable: early-generation hybrids more alien; later generations more human
- Pale or translucent skin; sometimes slightly blue-tinged
- Larger-than-human eyes; often dark grey or pale blue
- Thin build, fine hair or hairless
- Delicate facial features — smaller nose and mouth than typical human
- Early-generation hybrids: oversized cranium
- Advanced hubrids: nearly indistinguishable from humans in appearance
Reported Behavior
- Interacts with abductees in ways suggesting social or interpersonal interest
- Abductees sometimes describe being shown hybrid children they are told are "theirs"
- More emotionally present than greys; capable of apparent sadness or curiosity
- Some accounts describe hubrids attempting to learn human social norms
- Reported in craft environments as nursery or childcare contexts
- Advanced hybrids reportedly embedded in human society in some witness accounts
Notable Cases
Hopkins compiled independent abductee accounts describing hybrid children. Women reported being shown pale, thin children they were told were theirs. Witnesses across the country who had never met provided near-identical descriptions.
Prof. Jacobs used regressive hypnosis with 150+ abductees over 25 years, documenting a consistent hybrid program progression from grey-like early hybrids to fully human-appearing "hubrids." Compiled in "Secret Life" (1992) and "The Threat" (1998).
Unknown / Unclassified
Occasionally ReportedAlso known as: ultraterrestrial · interdimensional entity · shapeshifter
A significant proportion of NHI contact reports describe entities that do not fit any established typology — genuinely novel in form, behavior, or mode of interaction. Jacques Vallée argued that the sheer variety and cultural adaptability of encountered entities points toward a reality more complex than any single extraterrestrial explanation. This category acknowledges the epistemic limits of existing classification frameworks.
Physical Description
- No consistent physical description — varies radically across accounts
- Some reports describe entities that appear to change form during the encounter
- Others describe beings perceived only as presence, sound, or feeling
- Some accounts describe appearances apparently drawn from the witness's own mental imagery
- In Vallée's framework: entities that appear to manipulate perception itself
Reported Behavior
- Behavior ranges from completely non-interactive to highly communicative
- Some accounts describe entities that appear to test witness belief systems
- Communication style varies: verbal, symbolic, emotional, or purely conceptual
- Some cases involve apparent manipulation of time or memory
- Consistently produce a sense of profound non-human otherness in witnesses
Notable Cases
Anglican priest Rev. William Gill and 37 witnesses observed a craft at close range with beings on top that waved back at them when waved to. The beings' exact nature remained ambiguous. The case is notable for its large number of credible witnesses and interactive quality.
In "Passport to Magonia," Vallée documented the similarity between modern UAP encounter beings and pre-modern folklore entities across unconnected cultures — fairies, elementals, demons. He proposed that the same intelligence has presented itself in forms adapted to the cultural expectation of each era.
These categories represent patterns identified across independently reported cases. Classification is descriptive, not definitive — the nature and origin of reported non-human entities remains an open scientific question.
