On the night of September 19 to 20, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving south through the White Mountains of New Hampshire on US Route 3, returning from a vacation, when they observed a bright, moving light in the sky that appeared to track their car along the highway. Barney stopped the vehicle in an open area and stepped out to observe the object through binoculars. He described a disc-shaped craft with a double row of windows, inside which figures were clearly visible. He described one figure in particular — wearing a dark uniform — who met his gaze through binoculars with an expression Barney later described as conveying powerful, commanding intent. Overcome with fear, Barney ran back to the car.
The Hills drove away rapidly but later discovered they had arrived home approximately two hours later than their route and average speed would have required. They had no memory of this missing period. In the weeks that followed, both Betty and Barney experienced persistent anxiety, nightmares, and intrusive partial images. Barney developed unusual physical symptoms. In 1964, psychiatrist Dr. Benjamin Simon — a highly regarded Boston physician specializing in hypnosis who had used the technique to treat WWII combat stress, with no personal interest in UAP — began a series of hypnotic regression sessions with the Hills. Betty and Barney were regressed in separate sessions, each unaware of the other's account.
Both independently described being taken aboard the craft by small beings with gray skin, oversized heads, and large eyes. Both described a physical examination. Betty described in detail a star map shown to her during the experience — a three-dimensional display she was allowed to study. Amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish spent years constructing three-dimensional models of nearby star systems and in 1968 proposed that Betty's drawing matched the Zeta Reticuli binary star system, a result that was published in Astronomy magazine and generated substantial scientific discussion before being disputed on methodological grounds.
Dr. Simon's professional stature, the independent production of consistent accounts under separate hypnosis, and the physical symptoms documented prior to regression give the Hill case a different character from later abduction accounts that emerged without contemporaneous medical documentation. The Hill case became the foundational template for the abduction phenomenon in Western culture, and remains the most thoroughly medically supervised case in the literature.
