Robert Taylor Incident — Livingston, Scotland

On the morning of November 9, 1979, Robert Taylor, a 61-year-old forestry worker employed by the Livingston Development Corporation, was walking through Dechmont Woods near Livingston, West Lothian with his dog. In a forest clearing, he came face to face with a large, dark spherical object approximately 6 meters in diameter with a rough surface and a narrow flange around its middle, appearing to shimmer and creating a visual distortion.

From the base of the object, two spiked spheres approximately half a meter in diameter separated and rolled toward Taylor. They attached themselves to his trouser legs, and he described feeling a strong pulling sensation and a choking acrid smell. He lost consciousness. When he came around, the object and spheres were gone. He found he could not walk or speak clearly, and his dog was behaving in a disturbed manner.

Taylor eventually crawled to his truck, drove it into a ditch, and walked home. His wife called the police. What makes the Livingston case unique in UK UFO history is that it was treated as a criminal matter by Lothian and Borders Police — specifically as a criminal assault, given the physical injury Taylor sustained. The investigation produced physical evidence: ladder-shaped impressions in the soft forest ground where the object had stood, and distinctive circular marks where the spheres had rolled. Taylor's torn trousers were submitted as evidence.

Taylor had no history of mental illness, was employed in a responsible forestry management role, and reported the incident with obvious discomfort rather than any eagerness for publicity. The physical evidence — confirmed by independent investigators, the torn trousers — provided objective corroboration that something physical had occurred. The case file remained officially open for years, as no resolution was ever found, and Taylor never changed his account until his death.
