2024 U.S. Air Base Drone Incursions — United Kingdom

Beginning in late November 2024, a series of unidentified drone incursions was reported over multiple U.S. Air Force installations in the United Kingdom, including RAF Lakenheath — home to the 48th Fighter Wing — as well as RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell. The incursions triggered security responses including temporary flight restrictions, ground stops, and the deployment of counter-drone measures.

The Pentagon and U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) acknowledged the incursions in response to media inquiries but provided limited details, citing ongoing security investigations. British authorities including the Civil Aviation Authority and Home Office were also involved. The drones exhibited flight endurance and navigational characteristics that intelligence analysts found difficult to attribute to commercially available systems.

The UK incursions occurred nearly simultaneously with a parallel series of drone sightings over restricted airspace in New Jersey, New York, and other northeastern U.S. states, which received significant media attention and Congressional inquiry. The simultaneous nature of the UK and U.S. incidents — affecting installations on both sides of the Atlantic — was noted by defense analysts as potentially coordinated activity, though the origin of the drones was not publicly confirmed as of early 2025.
