Event Description
On November 19, 2023, flight operations at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, Manipur, were suspended for several hours after an unidentified aerial object was detected in the airspace over the airport. The Indian Air Force scrambled two Rafale fighter jets — India's most advanced combat aircraft, acquired from France beginning in 2020 — to intercept and identify the object, representing one of the most modern and capable military aircraft ever deployed in response to a UAP incursion in South Asia.
The Rafale deployment reflected the seriousness with which Indian military authorities treated the Imphal airspace intrusion. Rafales are India's frontline air superiority fighters, typically reserved for high-priority missions. Their scramble to investigate an unidentified object over a civilian airport indicated that the contact could not be dismissed as a drone or other low-priority traffic — it required the capabilities of India's best interceptors. The simultaneous suspension of civilian airport operations confirmed that air traffic control and civil aviation authorities also treated the object as a genuine airspace management emergency.
Imphal's geographic position in Manipur, near the Myanmar border and in a region with active security concerns, gave the intrusion specific national security dimensions beyond the general UAP question. The northeast Indian states border Myanmar, where various armed groups operate, and any unidentified aerial activity in the region would be assessed against the possibility of surveillance or other military activity by non-state or foreign actors.
The IAF's investigation of the Imphal incident, and any subsequent identification of the object or attribution to a specific source, has not been publicly disclosed. The formal military response — scrambled Rafales, suspended civilian operations, and official acknowledgment that an unidentified object had triggered the response — made the Imphal incident one of the most transparent recent Indian military UAP responses, fitting within the broader pattern of increased official acknowledgment of UAP events across multiple countries in the 2020s.
The case joins a growing body of documented Indian Air Force UAP responses from modern high-performance aircraft, contributing to an emerging picture of the Indian military's ongoing engagement with unidentified aerial phenomena across multiple geographic regions and security contexts.
